Identifying new pathogenic antibodies that lead to autoimmune encephalitis

The research focuses on developing and applying advanced human stem cell–based models of the brainstem to identify novel pathogenic antibodies that lead to autoimmune encephalitis.

At the end of March 2026, the research was completed. The research team succeeded in creating a new model of human brain cells from the brainstem. This helps researchers better understand what happens in autoimmune encephalitis and allows them to test antibodies from patients.

An important breakthrough is the discovery of a new antibody, the SEZ6L2 antibody, in patients without a previous diagnosis. This helps the disease to be recognized better and faster.

The model also offers opportunities to study how the disease works and to develop new treatments. In this way, the research brings us closer to targeted care and more hope for patients.
