The Tandem Ride Against Meningitis

We are Jens Kooijman and Tommie de Vries, pupils at the Stedelijk Gymnasium Haarlem, and we are both 17 years old.

For our profile work, we are making a documentary about a tandem tour through the Netherlands. In four days, we will cycle through the Netherlands to raise awareness and raise money for the fight against meningitis. We are doing this in collaboration with the ItsMe Foundation, which is committed to public information and increasing knowledge about this serious disease.

This is not an arbitrary subject for us. Jens contracted bacterial meningitis in June last year and was rushed to the intensive care unit in Amsterdam. He then spent almost a week in hospital, and it took another month for him to recover at home. That traumatic experience had a profound impact and is the driving force behind this project.

During our journey, we want to do more than just cycle; we also want to collect stories. We’ll be interviewing GPs, young people, and people on the street to hear what they know about meningitis, and we’ll share our experiences via social media. In this way, we hope to spread awareness in a personal and creative manner.

Our campaign demonstrates how young people can truly make an impact. We don't just want to raise money, but also to initiate conversations about the importance of early recognition, the role of the medical world, and the personal consequences of this disease.

By combining sport, media, and motivation, we hope to inspire and contribute to a greater social cause.

 

On the go, we interview GPs, young people and passers-by, and share everything via social media. This way, we want to show how young people can truly make an impact with personal commitment and creativity.
