In April 2026, our lives changed from one day to the next. What started with a few vomiting episodes turned out, within a matter of hours, to be bacterial meningitis caused by meningococcus B. Less than twelve hours later, Luana was in intensive care, where she was kept in an artificial coma for a week.

That week is almost impossible for us to describe. The helplessness and uncertainty were devastating.

Fortunately, Luana has made an incredible recovery within five weeks. We are grateful for that every single day. At the same time, this illness had a huge impact on our family, and we are still dealing with the consequences on a daily basis.

That’s why I want to do something in return. By taking part in ‘Dwars door Hasselt’, I’m raising money for the ItsME Foundation. I truly believe it’s very important that more attention is paid to meningitis. Increased awareness, more research and earlier diagnosis of this disease can really make a difference for other children and families.
