In 2009, during my second pregnancy, I contracted encephalitis. Against all odds, after a long period of rehabilitation, I made a full recovery and returned to my former self. I feel incredibly fortunate to have had such a positive outcome, as many people do not survive this illness or are left with lasting consequences.
At that moment, my life changed completely. From days when I felt invincible, to a period where even the smallest step was a huge challenge.
Sport has helped me regain strength, trust my body again, and carry on, even on the most difficult days.
I am one of the few fortunate ones to have made a full recovery. At the same time, I am acutely aware that it turns out very differently for many others and how much resilience, care, and adaptation that demands from patients and their loved ones.
The ItsME Foundation is committed to changing that by increasing awareness and stimulating research. Because only with more knowledge and faster recognition of encephalitis can more people get the same chance of recovery.
I am committed to raising money for more research. Not for myself, but for everyone who is still fighting, for everyone in whom the disease is recognised too late, and for everyone who risks losing their future.
